French Quarter
Today we explored the French Quarter. We are staying two blocks from the start.
Thank you, Dianne, for the suggestion of Cafe Du Monde. We
had delicious beignets and cafe au laits. For those of you who may not know, a beignet is a french donut and cafe au lait is half coffee and half milk.
Next, we were off the French Market. It is an open air
market with restaurants, trinket and souvenir booths, and local food stands.
Gator is popular here as well as turtle soup, and frog legs.
Although, I won’t try it.
Voodoo and graveyards are talked about a lot. Locals are
proud of their graveyards and if you ask, they will tell you more than you need
to know about burial. Here are some voodoo dolls that were for sale at the
market.
The streets of New Orleans are quite varied and quaint in
their own way. The economic diversity of the stores, restaurants and bars is apparent. We went into a few high end antique stores today that were
just gorgeous in their collections of silver, gold, jewels and more importantly chandeliers.
A lot of the old hitch posts remain on the streets.
One of my favorite things about New Orleans is the public
transportation streetcars. They were restored in 2004 and are the means of
transport for many in the city.
We spent the afternoon on the Mississippi watching barges
push freight up and down the river. One barge was 1,200 feet long. It is
incredible to see the barges navigate through the river.
Now below is a video clip of a woman playing the steam of a
steamboat on the Mississippi. It was interesting at first, but soon became too much.
Tomorrow we are off to explore two sugar plantations. The
weather is muggy, mid 80’s with a light rain on and off. Hopefully tomorrow we
will have some sun.
