Day Five

Kentucky Oaks

Lilies for the Fillies

We took a shuttle to the Kentucky Oaks after lunch today. The shuttle was the way to go. Easy travel to Churchill Downs, and easy travel home. You cannot believe how many people there were at the Downs today.

It was a little chilly. About 60 degrees and a wind of about 10-15 knots. Needless to say, my outfit started as:

And ended as:

Mom was much stronger than me. I gave in, and many of the ladies wanted my jacket.

The races were nothing like I expected. Our seats are very close to the track, which was excellent. But the atmosphere is very different from what we are used to. In the South, it seems you can smoke anywhere, both indoors and outdoors. That took a while to get used to. Also, Churchill Downs is not very diligent about picking up the trash, which was surprising. It was awesome to be surrounded by people dressed to the nines and wearing gorgeous hats.

Mom and I placed our first bet ever on Untapable #13. She was the favored horse, and we doubled our money!

We couldn’t leave the Oaks without having a Lily! It was delicious!

Tomorrow we are off to the Derby! My bet will be on Wicked Strong.
