Day Twenty One

Great Sand Dunes National Park

Today we went to the Great Sand Dunes National Park with Beau and Heidi. Driving in this part of Colorado is very pretty. The high peaks of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains surround the flat desert like land.

The attraction of this national park is the largest sand dunes in North America. The contrast of the mountains, dunes, and flat land is unique. Here is a photo of the dunes from a distance.

Unlike many of the other national parks, there is not a road to drive and explore the entire park. Instead, you pull into a parking lot where there is a trail to access the dunes and the Medano Creek.

Beau and I ventured a little but into the sand dunes. Some climb the dunes to the very top. As you can imagine the sand is very tiring to walk through. To reach the top it is approximately 1.5 miles.

Here’s a photo of Beau I had to include.

We had a really wonderful day. Nice and relaxing. The variety of terrain and landscapes of this national park were truly a sight to see and explore.

Off to Rocky Mountain National Park tomorrow, and another mountain pass, but I’m ready this time.
