Gardiner, MT to Garryowen, MT
238 Miles
We left Yellowstone a day early to cut down on the driving
to Mount Rushmore. Montana never ceases to amaze in its landscape. The entire
state thus far is beautiful to drive. Rolling green hills, mountains and
unlimited pasture land filled with cattle.
This afternoon, we explored Little Bighorn Battlefield
National Monument. It is the famous battlefield of the Native Americans and the 7th Cavalry led by Lt. Col. George Armstrong
Custer. After listening to an extensive Ranger talk about the battle, you are
left pondering who was really right in this fight and was anyone at all? It was a part of history that I am grateful to have learned more about.
There is a National Cemetery at the entrance of the
monument.
Originally, all the soldiers were buried in shallow graves
at their place of death on the battlefield. Americans in the east were
outraged. The Army then constructed this monument and placed all the soldiers
in a mass grave around. Granite markers still mark the locations of where each
soldier fell and it is the only battlefield in the world where this is the
case.
These stones mark fallen soldier locations including G.A. Custer.
Today was a history lesson ending with puzzling thoughts. Tomorrow
we are off to South Dakota.
