Day Thirty Five

Needles, CA to Three Rivers, CA
366 Miles

Today was a long travel day with a lot of driving. We went over two mountain passes, which seem like hills relative to the passes in Colorado.

Half of the drive was through the desert. I think we all have seen enough deserts for a while. Surprisingly, we saw more oil wells today. Unlike Texas, these wells were very close together. Once we left the desert, the drive was very pretty. We drove through fields of oranges, lemons, nuts, and grapes. The fields were lush and green. A big change from what we have seen in the past two weeks.

I meant to mention yesterday we went through another inspection station at the California border. Again, it was unexpected and I wasn’t looking forward to it. It turns out this was an inspection station for agricultural purposes. The agent asked if we were bringing any plants of firewood into California. We state we were not, and she gave us a certificate that we have to retain for our entire time in California.

There have been a lot of firsts on this trip.

We are off to see the Sequoias in the morning. In the afternoon, we will drive to Yosemite.
