Sonoma Valley
After receiving advice from the campground attendant, we
decided to explore the less commercialized Sonoma Valley. He had highlighted for us some of his
favorite wineries in the valley.
Our first stop was to Chateau St. Jean. We were surprised to find in the parking lot
a touring group of antique Packards and Hartfords. They had trailered the vehicles in to the
area and are off as a group to do some travelling. This fall they plan to come to Lake
Winnipesaukee and caravan to Rockport, Rockland and mid
coast Maine.
Chateau St. Jean is
of beautiful French style architecture with meticulous gardens and hedges.
To my delight, I was able to capture a couple of broad wing
hummingbirds enjoying the nectar of the flowers.
We were then off to Ledson.
The Ledson family is one of the oldest winemaking families in the Sonoma
Valley. Mr. Ledson was a very well to do
gentleman who built this home for his family.
Because of the grandeur of the building, he was encouraged to open the
property up for public viewing and access.
The building is in fact very beautiful with three wine tasting
rooms. It was a little too early in the
day for us to partake in the sample tastings.
We were hoping for a tour of the winery, but it was unavailable to us
today.
For lunch we decided to drive down to the Town of Sonoma and
do some exploring. Sonoma is filled with
small restaurants, and as you can imagine, all offer wine tasting as well. We peeked inside one shop and saw this
amazing, full size cork herford.
Tomorrow we are off to Bodega Bay to see the Pacific Ocean and marinas. We are then off to the San Francisco airport. I am
flying back to Boston and Alysa flies in to rejoin Chuck after her wedding in South Carolina.
